Laurence Bates is Director, Managing Executive Officer, General Counsel, Chief Risk Officer and Chief Compliance Officer for Panasonic Corporation, based in Osaka. Previously, he was senior managing director and chief legal officer, LIXIL Group Corporation, Tokyo; general counsel. BE Japan and GE Capital japan, GE Medical Systems Asia, Tokyo and Hong Kong; associate, Morrison & Forester, Tokyo; and associate, Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison (New York and Beijing). He has served as president for the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan. Mr. Bates received his BA from Yale University and JD from Harvard Law School. He was the recipient of the Fulbright Senior Professional Research Grant, Tokyo University and was a Yale-China Teaching Fellow, Wuhan University, China.
